Wachovia Cup

The Wachovia Cup, presented and sponsored by Wachovia Bank, N.A., recognizes overall excellence in high school athletics among NCISAA member institutions.  As such, the cup has become the single most valued athletic achievement award in  North Carolina.

Since 1985 the Wachovia Cup has been presented to the schools in each classification (1A and 2A) with the best overall interscholastic athletic program.  Beginning in 1999 - 2000, the Wachovia Cup has been awarded in three classifications, 1A, 2A, and 3A, with awards being issued to the school with the most combined points.  The winning schools in each classification receive an engraved silver cup and a banner.  Both awards are provided as permanent recognition of that year's athletic excellence.

The winning schools are determined by point totals earned through competition in state championships.  Each school that finishes in the top eight of a state championship receives Wachovia Cup points.  If a particular state championship allows for inter-classification competition, the points are awarded based on each school's standing relative to other schools in its classification.

Wachovia points are awarded as follows:  50 points for first place, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh, and 15 for eighth.  In the event of a tie, the point total for that finish is divided evenly among the schools involved.
