Established in 2006, the James Heyward Henry Tri-Season Student-Athlete Award recognizes those student-athletes who make the commitment to contribute to the athletics program during all three sports seasons. Jim Henry ’80 was on this campus as a student when Gaston Day School first opened its doors in 1967. Jim was a three-sport athlete as a fierce competitor in football, basketball and golf. His older brothers, George and Bill, molded him into the young man he became and bear witness to his competitive instincts. Jim graduated from North Carolina State University and worked for Henry Fibers, Incorporated. He married fellow Gaston Day School graduate Jeanne Williams. Their three children, Rob, Carol Anne and Martha, continue to be very active in sports. Jim was active in the West Gastonia Boys Club, donating sports equipment, and served as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church. Jim passed away following an automobile accident in the North Carolina mountains in September, 1997. Thanks to Jim’s family, the Gaston Day School family enjoys physical education classes, competitive athletics, recreational sports, meals and numerous other activities with friends in the James Heyward Henry Student Activities Center. The 2006-2007 recipients are: Kyle Bonesteel, Sara Bonesteel, Ben Carstarphen, William Carstarphen, Brooke Conrad, Shelton Current, Peter Dyke, Jessica Giovanni, Alex Lim, Gibson Montgomery, Erin Meyer-Cuno, Stacey Myers, Samantha Parton, Blake Porter, Caleb Smithers, Bailey Sowell, Jordie Sowell, Lauren Toole, Anna VerMeulen, and Whitney Workman.
